Legally Blonde the Musical Review (Singapore, 2018)

Miss Woods comma Elle Woods made me want to be brave again, to follow my heart and be true to myself! OMG!

Elle Woods followed her heart to pursue love back with Warner when he dumped her for Harvard University. She worked hard to get into Harvard Law but her heart shatter when Warner proposed to another girl, Vivian. Broken hearted and with her academics failing badly, Emmett helps Elle finds a brand-new goal in her life. Elle finally found the courage to be true to herself through her ups and downs in her university life.

Reflecting on Elle Wood’s personality, she may be rich blonde with a 4.0 in fashion merchandise, but she’s not that blonde. Her straightforwardness, courage to pursue what’s most important in her heart really resonated with me.

Unlike the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber style musical, Legally Blonde the musical is a contemporary MTV/Pop style musical with funny puns and multiple Hollywood references.

Think of it as watching a movie (a combination of a funny Blonde movie + Bring it on+ Greek chorus from Hercules) with style of music numbers like Wicked the musical.

One needs to remember that this musical isn’t an opera style, which dominates the musical domain, but you can still expect great vocal powers from all the actors, including the chorus.

Great vocals

Like I had mentioned, the singing and dancing power of the actors are excellent; it’s was like watching quality American Idol power singing in a story. Besides the main cast – Elle, Warner, Emmett; look out for Professor’s Callaghan and Vivian’s singing power. Professor Callaghan holds the bass notes of the song ‘Shark in the water’ and it was a delight to listen to. On the other side, my friend and I were impress with Vivian’s high notes and her vocal power hitting the ending of ‘Legally Blonde’.

Hilarious jokes and puns

If you are very familiar to USA pop culture like I do, you will laugh your hearts off on some ‘dumb blonde’ jokes, like, “…it may be perfect for a blonde, but I’m not that blonde. I maybe in love, but I’m stupid, lady, I’ve got eyes.”

Or the stereotypical nerdy-Harvard professors’ reactions; “…yes, and she has a letter of recommendation from Opera Winfrey!”

of course, there are so much more, but I’ve leave it to you to discover it from the show.

The Dogs

Rufus and Bruiser are so damn cute!

The UPS guy

Yeah, you JUST need to see him in action.

My Favourite Tunes

There are quite a number of songs that really makes the show, but it’s the lyrics that is really inspiring.

“So much better”
Love the lyrics! It just tells me happiness is something that can be achieve by myself and not from someone else.

“Seeing my name up on that list
That beats the first time that we kissed
You thought I was dumb
But I think that somebody’s judgement was poor
Seeing my name in black and white
It’s like making love with you all night
NO WAIT!
It feels so much better
Hello much better
It’s oh, oh, oh, oh
Much better
‘cause I am so much better than before”

“Take it like a man”
Love that process of Elle taking Emmett shopping, and of course the lyrics. It just simply put that reality is cruel and bias, we all had to look spiffy and neat to make a good impression to others. Even if it’s a little expensive, it’s all worth it because now, people will look beyond that surface and see the real you. Although the idea of this overall is pretty superficial,  but the concept is just plain honesty.

“Here you’ll become what you’re supposed to be
You think you can’t but you can.
Think of the guy you want most to be.
Here’s your chance to make it
So take it like a man.”

“That’s the best part
The outside is new.
But now it reflects, what’s already in you.
Couldn’t change that if I wanted to
And I do not.”

Shortfalls

The musical had many great songs, many which I will keep singing to after, but I felt it lacked a signature /complete song that can be cut into a musical soundtrack. Unlike the classical musical that rely heavily on props, the international touring crew leverage more on digital screens, so there became a lack of materials on stage. However, the digital screens also gave a different dimension to the musical with the interactivity that can be achieved with animation, but personally I still prefer the wow from props.

…Hello Kitty

Overall, yes, Elle Woods may be a total vision of pink, Legally Blonde musical is one great entertaining show to watch. Not only you will follow Elle’s journey in Harvard, you will learn that ‘Following your heart never goes out of style’, always ‘keep it positive’, and be true to yourself – the message Miss Elle Woods want to tell all the girls in the world.
